There is a powerful expression of our yearning. But now that we have the revolutionary spirit, we must not lose sight of the brotherhood awareness. Temper the revolutionary spirit. Culture identification is needed, but we must not let it lead us to hatred.

Reyes Lopez Tijerina

Uncover the rich history...Juan Bautista Valdez Land Grant

The story behind the quote...

Reyes López Tijerina's activism was important to Spanish land grants in northern New Mexico due to his efforts to address historical injustices and advocate for the rights of land grant communities. Tijerina played a significant role in raising awareness about the historical land grant issues and advocating for the restoration of land rights to the descendants of the original Spanish and Mexican settlers in the region.

Here's why his activism was important:

  1. Land Grant History: Spanish and Mexican settlers in what is now northern New Mexico had received land grants from colonial authorities that guaranteed them ownership of certain lands. However, after the United States acquired the territory in the mid-19th century, many of these land grants were challenged, and the settlers faced dispossession and loss of their ancestral lands.
  2. Dispossession and Exploitation: Over the years, various factors, including changes in legal frameworks, land disputes, and encroachments by newcomers, led to the loss of land for many Hispanic families in the region. Tijerina's activism highlighted the historical dispossession and exploitation faced by these communities.
  3. Championing Civil Rights: Tijerina was a civil rights activist who believed that the struggles of land grant communities were interconnected with broader civil rights issues. He saw the denial of land rights as a reflection of systemic discrimination and sought to address these injustices through legal means.
  4. Tierra Amarilla Courthouse Raid: One of the most significant events associated with Tijerina's activism was the 1967 raid on the Tierra Amarilla courthouse. Tijerina and his supporters stormed the courthouse to draw attention to the land grant issues and demand justice for the land grant heirs. While the raid was a controversial action, it brought national attention to the land grant struggles and amplified the calls for reform.
  5. Legal and Political Impact: Tijerina's activism contributed to a broader movement that ultimately led to legal and political changes. The awareness generated by his actions and advocacy helped pressure authorities to reexamine land grant claims and restitution efforts. Legal reforms and court decisions followed, which recognized the validity of some land grants and provided avenues for addressing historical injustices.
  6. Cultural and Historical Significance: Beyond legal and political implications, Tijerina's activism helped preserve the cultural heritage and historical significance of land grant communities. By fighting for land rights, he contributed to the preservation of traditions, stories, and identities tied to these ancestral lands.

In summary, Reyes López Tijerina's activism was crucial to Spanish land grants in northern New Mexico because it shed light on the historical injustices faced by land grant communities, raised awareness about their struggles, and contributed to legal and social changes that aimed to rectify these injustices and recognize the rights of the descendants of the original settlers.

Connections through time periods

While both Tijerina and Valdez were connected to land grant issues and fought for the rights of Hispanic communities, they operated in different time periods and focused on distinct aspects of the broader land grant struggle. Tijerina's activism in the mid-20th century centered on raising awareness about historical land grant injustices and advocating for justice through civil rights actions, while Valdez's involvement was situated in the historical context of the Pueblo Revolt of 1837 and the resistance against unjust land policies during the Mexican period.
